Super Mario Run received 3.5 million downloads in its first day, eclipsing another highly popular app game, Pokémon GO, which had only 900,000. It has reached the No. 1 spot in the App Store's top grossing and top free charts in the United States.
During an October 2017 Financial Results Briefing, it was reported that the app had been downloaded more than 200 million times worldwide, with 90% of the downloads being from outside Japan. Despite the large amount of downloads, it was also stated that the game had failed to reach an "acceptable profit point."

App Annie estimates that about one million of those downloads lead to the user paying for the title, with 55 percent being from the United States, earning $14 million in sales. The iOS version of Super Mario Run was the tenth most downloaded app in 2016 and the top downloaded free game in 2017. With the company's end-year report for fiscal year 2016, which ended on March 31, 2017, the combined downloads for Super Mario Run across iOS and Android was approaching 150 million, and climbed to 200 million six months later.
Despite these numbers, the game missed some of the anticipated metrics, particularly in Japan. On the Monday following the game's release on iOS, Nintendo's and DeNA's stock price dropped over seven percent due to its poor market reception. By December 26, Super Mario Run was no longer the top grossing app in any nation, though remained one of the top downloaded apps in 63 countries. Nintendo's stocks had dropped over 18 percent within the first two weeks of release. Within three weeks, market analysis firm Newzoo estimated that the app had been downloaded over 90 million times, with approximately $30 million in revenue from the roughly three percent who had purchased the full game. Wall Street Journal's Dan Gallagher stated this conversion rate represented the difficulty in convincing mobile gamers to purchase content. Nintendo later reported in a total of 78 million downloads, with more than five percent paying for the full game, by January 2017 in fiscal year earnings report. This generated 6 billion ($53 million) in revenues from the game. The game sold 4 million paid downloads by this time.

Nintendo was anticipating that they would obtain 10 percent conversion of app downloads into full purchases, and noted in February 2017 that twenty countries account for 90 percent of the game's revenue, and that within those countries they were approaching this 10 percent conversion rate. However, Nintendo's president Tatsumi Kimishima was disappointed the next month, when the revenue from the iOS version failed to fulfill the company's expectations. Nintendo's next mobile title, Fire Emblem Heroes, released two months after Super Mario Run and which used the freemium payment approach, had only 10 percent of the previous title's downloads, yet had outperformed it in overall revenue by the end of Nintendo's fiscal year 2016. Kimishima said that Nintendo had learned several lessons in development and releasing of mobile games from Super Mario Run. Kimishima said that "we honestly prefer the Super Mario Run model", though in a June 2017 investor question-and-answer session, he said "in the future we will consider not only a single set price, but other methods that incorporate a wider variety of elements that allow as many consumers as possible to play", suggesting that Nintendo's mobile strategy may move away from the pay-once model.
Within days of the game's App Store release, journalists noted a number of unofficial video game clones that appeared on the Google Play store, which they believe was prompted by the lack of an Android version of Super Mario Run at the time and allowing developers to take advantage of uninformed consumers. In at least one case, an Android clone contained malware designed to collect sensitive information from a player's device. Super Mario Run was the most-downloaded game for Android devices in 2017.
By July 2018, Sensor Tower estimated that Super Mario Run had generated a total of US$60 million. As of September 2018, the game has been downloaded and installed on about 300 million devices worldwide, including 10 percent in Japan.

Fans of the popular Nintendo endless runner, Super Mario Run, will have noticed that the game has received an update today which brings both the iOS and Android games up to version 2.1.1. As is to be expected both are free downloads via the App Store and Google Play Store respectively.
Now let's see if the name of THE Mario is enough for phone casual players to make them buy a pay-in-advance mobile game, instead of downloading some random free runner so they can make their kids shut up / to have something to play on the toilet. If Mario can't do it, I don't know what else can.
From what I've played so far this game does take a skill and takes getting used to the game mechanics which for it's simplicity are super solid. I think this is a fantastic endeavour into mobile for Nintendo.
I really regret downloading this game. I honestly thought it would've been fun, but it was just so pandering and repetitive for me. I cannot believe this is Nintendo's Mario app. I wonder if I should even have high hopes for the Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing apps.....
It's ok for us gamers, 8 for a download is great value. We pay that all the time for indie titles on Wii U, or Virtual Console classics. These people don't. Now I'm glad Nintendo didn't go the scum route and make you pay for lives or grind like hell to earn more. I think it's smart and a refreshing change to have people pay a one off purchase for everything, after giving them a taste. But the price is too high and sends anyone who might be tempted into a rage fit. 3.99 would have been adequate. Hell, 99p for a world would have at least hidden the cost a bit if they wanted to charge a bit extra. Maybe even a discount for the first weekend. But sadly, once they hit the pay wall of 8 most people turn away and probably will delete the app. I wasn't on Twitter all night but I never saw it trend. If it never, it tells you one thing - there was little buzz. This is a great little game, but unfortunately Nintendo, you've not taken advantage of the hype with the price.
I've been looking on Appannie for SMR stats - it shows as No.1 Free download and No.1 Grossing($$$s paid) game in the USA for the 15th December (so far). UK has superb sales, Spain doesn't show any sales, Japan doesn't show any sales yet either - maybe we have to wait full 24 hours for these to report. but what gets me is: WHO ON EARTH IS PUMPING MONEY INTO "MOBILE STRIKE", "GAME OF WAR" ( essentially the same game as mobile strike but re-skinned) and "CLASH ROYALE" - these games are pay to win. . . how can you get any satisfaction from that?Basically - I'm discovering that the App store is a truly horrible place for proper gaming -It is also weird to see that "casual/mobile" gamers that have never owned a Handheld console are now so used to the free-to-play-pay-to-win formula that it is now , sadly, entirely the norm - to the point that people are complaining about the SMR price tag.Well, I for one am glad that nintendo has taken this approach.I'm sorry that the "timed release" was a bit of a up as I am in Japan now and SMR didn't release until 2:39am on 16th December here after being told it would by 5:00pm on the15th.Let's hope it has the desired effect and introduces everyone to 3ds and Switch

@Turbo857 It's only free for four levels... the game isn't free. Who cares if it costs nothing to download. You still have to pay.10 dollars to get more than 5 minutes of gameplay. Top grossing? How much money does that mean? For how long?
@HappyMaskedGuy Honestly the game is better than I anticipated. It's a fun pastime you can play for a minute or two or a long time if you really want to perfect your timing. So yeah get it when it comes to android if you're interested... of course though... I'm sure the ios version will be superior to the android release
